If you can put the corners in their right place you only need to use a 8 move permutation to solve the rest which I call "the cross"-pieces. The 20 moveable pieces that make up the 3x3x3 cube could be arranged into 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (over 43 quintillion or so) combinations of positions! It is also over 7 billion combinations for each man, woman, and child on Earth!) And yet only one of those combinations would solve the cube. Taking the cube apart is a lot faster as well; there are only 20 pieces to remove but 54 stickers. The first step in lubricating a cube is taking it apart anyway, so all good cubes have been taken apart at least once before.

Get a single X on one side of the cube, by positioning the corners and the center piece on the same side. This method averages less than 50 moves in speedsolving, however the minimum number of algs required for the whole method is 158 (306 with reflections and inverses) for the F2L step and 270 (493 with reflections and inverses) for a total of 428 (799 with reflections and inverses).
