David Singmaster and Alexander Frey developed a way to solve the puzzle in 25 moves (using computers). It is probably the only puzzle-toy that people have written books about (including the one written by a 12 year old boy that sold 1.5 million copies). When you have completed the first layer, you can do nothing without breaking it up.
